There were a number of interviews conducted over the course of filming. A documentary is about access and the main subject of this film was an individual who had grew up within the institutions. So developing trust was the most factor in shaping the interviews. A person is not going to open up and tell you the most intimate details of their life without some measure of comfort. Can I trust this person, and furthermore, how does one open up on camera?

We conducted ten interviews with Jimi Simmons over the course of three years. It was challenge to get him to talk openly about his experiences in the prison system. Some details are difficult to retell, others don’t make sense without the set up of years to explain what has been building to bring us to that point. A childhood spent within
institutions is not an easy topic to explain.
